After a collision, safety and medical help come first. Stop, move to safety if you can, and call the emergency services if anyone is hurt or there's danger. Swap the required details and report it as local rules say. Only take photos when it's safe, and never put yourself at risk on a motorway.

At the scene

• Stop safely
• Turn on hazard lights
• Check for injuries
• Call the emergency services if needed
• Move to safety if you can

Swap details

• Swap names and addresses
• Swap insurance details
• Note registration numbers
• Witness names and numbers
• Note the owner's details if different from the driver

Evidence

• Photograph the damage if safe
• Photograph the scene if safe
• Note the time, place and weather
• Note what happened while it's fresh

Reporting

• Report it to the police if required
• Tell your insurer
• Note the claim number
• Note the police reference if there is one

Afterwards

• Get checked by a doctor if you feel unwell later
• Arrange repairs through your insurer
• Arrange a courtesy car if needed
