Petal Home is built with care, and that includes looking after your information and being open about who we are. This page is our privacy policy, and our legal and company details, in plain English. It covers both our website (petalhome.app) and the Petal Home app.

Privacy policy

The short version

We only collect the information we need to run Petal Home and to give you a calm, useful family app. We never sell your information, we never share it for other companies to advertise to you, and you can ask us to delete it at any time. The longer detail is below.

Who we are

Petal Home is the data controller responsible for the personal information collected through our website and app. This means we decide how and why your information is used. Petal Home is operated by Petal Home Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales. You can find our full details in the Legal & company details section below.

The information we collect

When you join our waitlist (website):

• Your email address, so we can let you know when Petal Home opens.

When you create an account and use the app:

• Your account details, such as your name and email address. Your password is stored securely and we can never see it.
• Your household, meaning the family space you create or join, and the members who are part of it.
• The things you add in Petal Home, such as your lists, notes, plans, calendar events, grocery items, the outgoings and bills you record, your reminders and chores, and any photos, documents or links you save. Some of this is shared with your household, and some you can keep private to yourself.
• Reminders and notifications, including a device token if you choose to turn on push notifications, so we can send the nudges you ask for.
• Approximate location, only if you allow it. The app asks your permission first, and only then uses your approximate location to show your local weather on the home screen. When the weather feature is on, your approximate location is shared with Apple's weather service (Apple WeatherKit) to fetch the forecast. You can turn this off at any time in your phone's settings.
• Calendar events, only if you choose to connect a calendar. You can connect Google Calendar, Outlook Calendar or, on iPhone, Apple Calendar, and keep them in step with Petal Home in both directions. See "Connecting a calendar" below for the full detail.
• Subscription information. When you subscribe, the payment is handled by the App Store (Apple) or Google Play (Android). We receive confirmation of your subscription status, but we never see or store your card details.
• Basic technical information, such as your device type, app version, language, and limited logs and crash reports, so we can keep Petal Home working properly and fix problems.

Cookies and tracking

Our website uses simple, privacy-friendly analytics to count visits and understand, in aggregate, who is finding Petal Home and which parts people find useful. It does not use cookies and does not identify you. It records anonymous, aggregate signals only, such as a page view, a swipe, your approximate location (a rough city or region), your browser, device type and language, and how quickly the page loaded. To work out that approximate location, your internet (IP) address is looked up through a location service and turned into a rough city or region; we store only that rough location and never store your IP address. To tell new visits from returning ones and to count roughly how many separate people visit, we keep one small anonymous marker on your device (a random tag with no personal information); it is not a cookie. We do not use advertising trackers, we do not build advertising profiles, and we never try to identify individual people. The app does not use advertising trackers either.

How and why we use your information

• To provide Petal Home. To create your account, run your household, and store and sync the things you add. Our legal basis is performing our contract with you.
• To keep you informed. To email you about the launch and occasional news, if you joined the waitlist or asked for updates. Our legal basis is your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
• For optional features. Such as showing local weather or sending push reminders. Our legal basis is your consent, given when you turn the feature on.
• To keep Petal Home safe and to improve it. To protect against misuse, keep the service reliable, and make it better over time. Our legal basis is our legitimate interests, balanced against your privacy.
• To meet our legal duties. For example, keeping basic records we are required to keep. Our legal basis is compliance with the law.

Who we share it with

We do not sell your information. We only share it with the trusted providers that help us run Petal Home on our behalf, and only with what they need:

• Supabase, which securely stores your account and household data for us.
• Apple and Google, which handle App Store and Google Play payments and deliver push notifications to your phone.
• Cloudflare, which provides our domain and content delivery, and helps keep the site secure.
• GitHub Pages, which hosts our website.
• Sentry, which collects technical crash and error reports (diagnostic data) so we can find and fix problems in the app.
• ipwho.is, a location service we use only to turn a visitor's IP address into an approximate city or region for anonymous analytics; we do not store the IP address.
• Apple WeatherKit, only if you turn on local weather, to show the forecast for your area.
• Google, only if you choose to connect Google Calendar, to import events or to keep it synced with Petal Home in both directions.
• Microsoft, only if you choose to connect Outlook Calendar, to keep it synced with Petal Home in both directions.

See "Connecting a calendar" below for the full detail on both. These providers act on our instructions and may not use your information for their own purposes. We may also share information if the law requires it, or to protect the rights and safety of people using Petal Home.

Connecting a calendar

You can connect the calendars you already use, so your household plan and your other calendars stay in step. Connecting a calendar is always your choice, and you can disconnect one at any time, which stops any further access.

You can connect more than one calendar. It is worth knowing where a calendar's events will show up before you connect it: a calendar connected to your household puts its events in the shared family calendar, where the other members can see them, while a calendar connected to your private calendar stays visible only to you. Only household admins can connect or remove a calendar that syncs with the household.

Google Calendar and Outlook Calendar

These keep in step with Petal Home in both directions, automatically, including while the app is closed. To do that, Petal Home requests read and write access and keeps that access until you disconnect. Events you add, change or delete in either place appear in the other.

Because the connection works both ways, Petal Home can also add and change calendars in your account, and set up a video meeting (Google Meet or Microsoft Teams) when you add one to an event. Meetings already in your Google or Outlook calendar appear in Petal Home too.

Petal Home does not read your email. If a meeting invitation arrives in your inbox, you can send that one event into Petal Home yourself, and only the event you chose comes across. We have no access to your mailbox.

For Google Calendar you can instead choose a one-way import, which is a one-off, read-only connection: Petal Home reads the calendars and events you select at that moment, copies them across, keeps no ongoing access, and never writes anything back.

Apple Calendar

On iPhone, Petal Home can also keep your Apple Calendar and your Petal Home calendar in step in both directions. This one works through your phone's own calendar system, with your permission, rather than through our servers.

For all connected calendars

We do not store your Google, Microsoft or Apple password. We use calendar information only to provide the calendar features you have chosen to turn on. We do not use it to develop, train or improve any artificial intelligence or machine learning models, and we do not sell it or pass it on to any third party. Petal Home's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Content you create and import

Most of what Petal Home holds is the content you put there yourself: your lists, notes, plans, reminders, calendar events, grocery items, the outgoings you record, and any photos, documents or links you add. Some of this you create directly in the app, and some you choose to bring in from elsewhere, for example by saving content from a website or bringing across events from another calendar.

We store this content so that Petal Home can do its job: keep it available, sync it across your devices, and show it to the right people. It is stored on our behalf by Supabase. Some of what you add stays private to you, and some is shared with your household, depending on the kind of content and the choices you make. Anything shared can be seen by the other members of your household, so it is worth checking whether something is private or shared before you add anything you would rather keep to yourself.

When you import something, we save the copy you asked us to bring in, and we may also keep the web address it came from so you can find the original again. The content you create or import is chosen and controlled by you: we store and show it on your instruction, and we do not monitor, review or moderate what you keep, except where we are required to act, for example in response to a valid legal complaint. Your content is not added to any public or searchable database, and we do not use it for any purpose other than running Petal Home for you.

Sensitive information you choose to store

Because Petal Home is a place for the bits and pieces of family life, you may sometimes choose to store information that feels personal or sensitive, such as a health note, a religious date on the calendar, or details of your household finances. Petal Home only ever holds this because you decided to put it there. We treat it exactly like your other content: it stays private unless you choose to share it within your household, and we do not use it for anything other than providing Petal Home to you. If you would rather not keep something sensitive in Petal Home, you are always free not to add it, or to remove it later.

Other websites and links

When you import content from another website, or follow a link saved in Petal Home, you are visiting a service we do not run. Those websites have their own privacy policies and terms, and we are not responsible for how they handle your information. It is worth glancing at their policies if you are unsure.

Sharing within your household

Petal Home is built for families, so some of what you add is shared with the household members you invite. Anything you mark as private stays visible only to you. Please only invite people you trust into your household, and only share what you are happy for them to see. If someone leaves a household or is removed, they lose access to what was shared going forward, but anything they had already seen, copied or exported while they were a member cannot always be pulled back.

Where your data is processed

Some of the providers we rely on, including Supabase, Apple, Google, Cloudflare, Sentry and ipwho.is, may process data on servers outside the United Kingdom. Where personal information is transferred outside the UK, we rely on appropriate safeguards, such as a UK adequacy decision for the destination country, or standard contractual clauses, so your information stays protected to UK standards.

How long we keep it

We keep your information for as long as your account is open. If you ask us to delete your account, we remove your personal data within one month, the period UK data protection law allows for responding to such requests, and usually much sooner. Deleted information may remain in our encrypted backups for a short period before those backups are routinely purged. We may keep a small amount longer where we need to meet legal or financial obligations. If you only joined the waitlist, we keep your email until launch and a reasonable period afterwards, or until you ask us to remove it.

Keeping your information safe

We take security seriously. Information is encrypted while it travels to and from your device, and your password is never stored in a readable form. It is securely hashed by our authentication provider (Supabase Auth), so no one, including us, can see it. Access is limited to people who need it, and we use trusted providers with strong security practices. Your content is held in our provider's secured systems and backed up so it is not lost. No service can promise perfect security, but we work hard to protect your information, and if a breach ever affected your rights we would report it to the ICO and, where required, tell you, in line with our legal duties.

When our team can access your information

We keep access to your information as limited as we reasonably can. A small number of authorised people may need to look at account information from time to time, but only where it is genuinely necessary, for example to help you with a support request, to investigate a fault or possible misuse, to keep Petal Home secure, or to meet a legal obligation. We would not claim that no one at Petal Home can ever access what you store, but access is controlled, limited to those who need it, and only for these reasons.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to:

• ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you;
• ask us to correct anything that is wrong;
• ask us to delete your information (see Deleting your data below);
• ask us to restrict or object to how we use it;
• ask for your information in a portable format;
• withdraw your consent at any time, for example for marketing emails or location.

You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the UK's data protection regulator, at ico.org.uk. We would always appreciate the chance to put things right first.

Automated decisions

Petal Home does not make automated decisions about you that have a legal effect or a similarly significant one. Anything Petal Home organises for you, such as sorting a list or sending a reminder you asked for, simply carries out what you have set up.

Children and families

Petal Home is a family app, so teenagers in the household can have their own account. You need to be at least 13 to use Petal Home. A parent or guardian sets up or approves a young person's account and stays responsible for it, and only a grown-up (18 or older) can create a household and take out the subscription that covers it. Anyone aged 13 to 17 joins a household a parent or guardian has already set up, rather than creating one themselves.

We take a number of steps to look after children who use Petal Home:

• a parent or guardian sets up or approves a child's account, and only a grown-up (18 or older) can create a household and take out the subscription that covers it;
• parents have per-child permission controls, choosing what each child can see and edit;
• we use no advertising, no tracking and no cookies, and we never sell anyone's information;
• location stays off unless it is switched on with permission;
• we only collect the information we actually need to run Petal Home.

These measures reflect the principles of the ICO's Age Appropriate Design Code (the Children's Code). If you believe a child has given us information without the right permission, please contact us and we will remove it.

Changes to this policy

As Petal Home grows, this policy may be updated. When it changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of the page. For material changes, we will give you a more prominent notice, such as an email or an in-app message, before they take effect.
