Getting ready for flooding before it happens. Follow official flood warnings and leave straight away if you are told to. Never walk or drive through flood water, never touch electrics while standing in water, and only protect belongings when it is safe.

Be prepared

• Sign up for flood warnings
• Check your insurance covers flooding
• Know how to turn off gas, water and electricity
• Save your insurer's claims number
• Plan your route out if you need to leave

When a flood is coming

• Move important things upstairs if safe
• Move the car to higher ground if safe
• Fit flood barriers or sandbags if safe
• Turn off gas, water and electricity only if safe
• Move pets to safety

After a flood

• Get the electrics checked before using them
• Photograph the damage when it is safe to return
• Report the damage to your insurer
• Throw away food that touched flood water

Leaving

• Follow official evacuation advice
• Agree where the family will go
• Arrange safe transport if needed
• Take your emergency grab bag if it is close by
