Free home insurance claim

What to do after a leak, flood, fire or break-in, from making the home safe to settling the claim. Don't go into unsafe buildings or touch damaged electrics, and follow your insurer's instructions before non-emergency repairs.

Make it safe

• Get emergency help if needed
• Turn off water, gas or electricity if safe and needed
• Arrange temporary protection from more damage

Record the damage

• Photograph damaged things and areas
• Video the damage
• List damaged items
• Keep damaged items until the insurer says you can throw them away

Report it

• Report it to your insurer
• Get a claim number
• Report a break-in to the police and get a crime number

The claim

• Find receipts and proof of value
• Find your contents inventory
• Fill in the claim form
• Keep receipts for emergency costs
• Check your policy excess or deductible

Repairs

• Get repair quotes the insurer agrees to
• Agree repairs with the insurer
• Arrange somewhere to stay if needed
• Keep a log of every call
