Getting your pet ready for an operation and looking after them while they recover. Follow your vet's advice on food, wound care, activity and medicines, and never give human painkillers unless your vet prescribes them.

Before the operation

• Confirm the date and drop-off time
• Follow the vet's fasting instructions
• Confirm the vet's medicine instructions
• Ask about costs and insurance
• Arrange transport there and back

Recovery space

• Set up a quiet, warm space
• Crate or small room if the vet advises
• Non-slip flooring
• Food and water bowls within easy reach

After surgery

• Collect medicines and instructions
• Cone or recovery suit if prescribed
• Write down the medicine schedule
• Check the wound as the vet showed you
• Plan who will be with them in the first days

Follow-up

• Book the check-up
• Book stitch removal if needed
• Save the vet's out-of-hours number
• Send the insurance claim if you have cover
