Appealing when your child doesn't get the school place you applied for. The process and deadlines differ by area, so read the refusal letter carefully. In England, accepting another school place does not stop you appealing.

After the refusal

• Read the refusal letter
• Note the appeal deadline
• Think about accepting the offered place while you appeal
• Ask to join the waiting list

The appeal form

• Get the appeal form
• Write your reasons clearly
• Submit before the deadline
• Check how the appeal must be sent

Evidence

• Gather supporting evidence
• Gather medical or social reports if relevant
• Write down any journey difficulties

The hearing

• Note the hearing date
• Prepare your appeal statement
• Arrange childcare or time off

Afterwards

• Read the appeal decision
• Look at other options if the appeal fails
