After Half Term: Getting the Family Back Into Routine

For many families, school starts again on Monday 2 November, although term dates and training days vary by school. After a week with a different rhythm, the return can feel like a bump. The first day back goes much better if the weekend does a little of the work: a quick check of what Monday actually needs, a gentle nudge back towards normal bedtimes, and a calm Sunday instead of one more outing.
The quick answer
- Saturday: check what Monday needs, and do the practical jobs while there's still time
- Sunday: a calm day, a familiar wind-down, and a bedtime that's a little closer to normal
- Sunday evening: bags, uniform, lunches and Monday's plans, sorted in fifteen minutes
- Monday and after: keep it kind, and give everyone a few days to settle
Half-term dates vary, so check your own school. Many schools return on Monday 2 November, but some have a training day first, and some children go back on different days.
Saturday: check Monday, then do the practical jobs
Start with what Monday really involves. Is it definitely a school day, and what time does the day start? Are there PE or swimming days this week, and do the clubs start again straight away? Is there a letter, a form or some homework that's been hiding in a bag? Once you know, the practical jobs are easier to finish:
- Uniform and kit: check everything is clean, fits and is ready for the right days. If anything's missing or no longer fits, our uniform and PE kit guide has the full check
- Bags: emptied, with library books, reading records and homework in
- Lunches: decide the week's lunch plan, and shop for what you need
The Home screen in Petal Home has a calendar card that shows the next few days of plans, and you can switch it to 7 days to see the week ahead, so Monday's plans, and the ones behind it, are in front of you before the week starts. Household plans are free, everyone in the household sees the same week, and each plan can have a note and a reminder before it. It's worth a look on Saturday, so nothing on Monday is a surprise.

Sunday: a calm day and an earlier bedtime
It's tempting to squeeze in one more outing, but a slower Sunday is usually kinder to everyone. If bedtimes have drifted later, start easing them back towards the usual school-night time and keep the wind-down calm and consistent. Aim for a calm evening, a familiar wind-down and a bedtime close to the usual school-night time, and expect that it may take a few days to settle. If your child is having a hard time with sleep, it's worth talking to your health visitor or GP.
In Petal Home, a household reminder can repeat on the days you choose and be assigned to one person, so a "wind-down starts" reminder on Sunday to Thursday nights reaches their phone. If you took repeating plans off the calendar for the break, this is a good moment to check the PE days and clubs are back on it.
Sunday evening: the fifteen-minute reset
A short check on Sunday evening catches most of what would otherwise turn up on Monday morning:
- Monday's bag: packed and by the door
- Uniform and shoes: laid out
- Lunch: decided, and made if you can do it ahead
- The week: who's doing drop-off and pick-up, and which days have clubs
- Anything school-specific: check the bag and school messages for anything Monday needs. Our school admin guide covers forms and payments
If your mornings are usually the difficult part, our school-morning routine guide works back from the leave time.
Restart the meals gently
Meals often drift over half term. A simple first-week plan helps: two or three dependable dinners, one easy night, and lunches sorted in advance. In Petal Home, dinners can be planned on the free plan, and recipe ingredients go onto the shared shopping list in a couple of taps. With Premium, you can start the week from "Your usual week" or copy it from last week.
Go easy on the first few days
Some children may be more tired or unsettled for the first few days back, and adults can be too. Keep the first week light where you can, with fewer plans, an earlier night, and something to look forward to on Friday. A calm return is worth more than a perfect one.
If your child is worried about going back, ask them what they're most looking forward to and what feels hard. A few minutes of listening on Sunday can make Monday easier.
Frequently asked questions
When do schools go back after October half term 2026?
Many schools return on Monday 2 November 2026, including schools in Wales, where the national term dates show half term ending on Friday 30 October, but dates vary by school and some have a training day first, so check your own school's calendar.
How do I get my child back into a school routine after half term?
Check what Monday involves, do the practical jobs on Saturday, keep Sunday calm, ease bedtimes back towards the usual school-night time, and set up bags, uniform and lunches on Sunday evening. Give everyone a few days to settle.
How can I sort out school uniform before the first day back?
Check that uniform and kit are clean, fit and are ready for the right days, and that bags are emptied and repacked. Doing it on Saturday leaves time to buy or borrow anything that's missing.
Can Petal Home help with the return to school?
Yes. The Home screen's calendar card shows the next few days of plans (switch it to 7 days for the week ahead), household plans and reminders are free, and a household reminder can repeat on the days you choose and be assigned to one person. With Premium, you can start the meal plan from Your usual week.
